History of Fukuyama Castle

Fukuyama Castle was constructed from 1619 by Mizuno Katsunari, a cousin of the Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Fukuyama prospered as a key transportation hub during the feudal Edo period, but with the Meiji Restoration of 1868, part of the castle was demolished. The surviving castle tower was burned down in a World War II air raid in 1945 but was rebuilt in 1966 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the city government’s establishment. 400 years after its construction, Fukuyama Castle remains a symbol of the region’s history and culture.
